7 Pretty Ways to Grow Basil

So far, I’m a bit of a boring purist when it comes to herbs. Basil gets its own pot. Rosemary gets its own pot. You get the idea. But herbs (including easy-to-grow basil) can be gorgeous in showy, composed window boxes and containers. After the jump, I’ve pulled together seven of my favorite basil garden displays, from elegant window boxes to a funky hanging shoe bag herb garden. I may have a weekend project ahead of me…

Pretty planting ideas for basil (and other herbs)

  • Top left: An easy going herb window box designed by Nancy Wallace.  I like how unfussy it is. I also like that the herbs and their varied textures get center stage while the flowers are accessories.
  • Top right: Yes, these herbs are still all in their own pots, but the assemblage of the galvanized metal containers feels so French countryside. Bonus: Ikea has metal containers that would do the trick for $0.79. Just remember to puncture a few holes in the bottom for drainage. (photo by Martin Poole via eHow)
  • Bottom left: I love the symmetry of this design and the simplicity of the green and white color palette. (image via thesimplyluxuriouslife.com)
  • Bottom right: This is a painting by the artist Susan Fornaro, but the abundant basil and draping vines and flowers are so romantic, and absolutely re-creatable in real life.

  • Left: The shoe bag garden! You can get full instructions for creating your own at Instructables.com. The repeating shoe bag pouches are so pretty and unexpected and such a clever way to maximize space. At the same time, I have to say I worry that they  may not look quite as lovely when the soil darkens them…
  • Top right: Another sweet assemblage. As with the galvanized metal containers, make sure to puncture holes in the bottom to avoid root rot. (via Apartment Therapy)
  • Bottom right: Pack thyme, rosemary, mint and several varieties of basil all together, and the effect is eye-catching and much more lush than the herbs would appear individually planted. (via bhg.com)
