This Week in the Garden

This week, the first real signs of fall arrived on my terrace. Since Labor Day, there have been mornings here and there when I’ve stepped out barefoot, only to retreat from the cold, but even if it felt like fall, it didn’t look like fall. Now, there’s really no denying it. The dahlias are blooming with their fall sunset colors, the azalea leaves are creeping from green to a rosy red, the ‘Husker Red’ penstemon has had tinges of dark color all summer, but now it’s deepening into crimson. And then there’s my little peach tree. So far fall is only outlining the edges of its leaves, but there’s no denying the outline.

But while fall is here for some plants, others are still pumping like its the fourth of July. Primarily, my tomatoes and peppers, and — I can’t quite believe it — my strawberries. All the pics after the jump.

Look how fat and happy those green tomatoes look! I’m hoping for at least one more big round of tomatoes before a freeze hits.

Still flowering happily…

But my favorite of all: late season strawberries. Or rather, A SINGLE late season strawberry. I predict it will be ready the first of October. Not a bad time for a little taste of summer.

Happy Fall!
